Intent

At St Peter’s we recognise the importance of promoting Christian values through the school and beyond.  Our three core values are:

  •  Faith
  • Love
  • Respect

These three important values are encompassed in our school’s Mission Statement which is “A love for God, ourselves and others”.
To help members of the school community to develop spiritually through mutual respect, sensitivity to the needs of others and through prayer and celebrations of shared values in order to nurture and strengthen the school family.

By living out these values we aim to create an awareness of a sense of belonging to and being part of the life of St Peter’s Catholic Primary School.

  • To encourage children to actively live their faith.
  • To help children to develop a personal relationship with God.
  • To develop the whole child: spiritually, mentally, morally, socially and culturally.
  • To teach the doctrines, traditions and culture of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • To offer children a wider experience of prayer and worship.
  • To provide a stable, secure and happy environment.
  • To foster and develop the spiritual life of each member of the school community.
  • To work in partnership with the home and parish.

Implementation

Religious Education at St Peter's consists of 10 percent of the weekly timetable for each class. However, Religious Education is not a standalone topic. Teachers are able to integrate Religious Education into different lessons and parts of the school day.

We are in a time of transition, at St Peter's and across the Archdiocese of Southward,  to ensure the teaching of Religious Education is inline with the new Religious Education Directory because of this, we currently have two schemes of work .

Teachers in Early Years and Key Stage One are using the new scheme, "Lighting the Path" and Key Stage Two teachers continue to use the scheme, The Truth, The Way and The Life until the materials for upper year groups have been released.

We feel see both schemes as starting points as teachers are encouraged to adapt their teaching; ensuring all pupil’s needs are met and lessons are always related to their lives. Teachers also ensure that when they teach Religious Education that they provide opportunities for the pupils to discuss, reflect and question what they have heard. Tasks in Religious Education will vary by class and by topic but can include writing tasks, construction, role-play, art, music and discussions. Teachers plan tasks which often involve the collaboration of pupils, promoting further discussions and learning.

Religious Education is also taught through our community links where we often welcome visitors and our Parish priest Father Arbogast Lekule. He often visits the school and takes part in discussions with pupils, reconciliation services and school masses. Pupils often go to the parish church to attend Mass and to also learn more about the church.
